Bodhicaryāvatāra Lineage Prayer

ན་མོ་རཏྣ་ཏྲ་ཡཱ་ཡ།

Namo ratnatrayāya!

ཆོས་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཐུབ་དབང་ཉི་མའི་གཉེན། །

chö kyi gyalpo tubwang nyimé nyen

Kinsman of the sun, dharma sovereign and mighty sage,¹

ས་བཅུའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་རྗེ་བཙུན་འཇམ་པའི་དབྱངས། །

sa chü wangchuk jetsün jampé yang

Powerful lord of the tenth bhūmi, Mañjughoṣa,

རབ་དགའི་ས་བརྙེས་རྒྱལ་སྲས་ཞི་བ་ལྷ། །

rabgé sa nyé gyalsé zhiwa lha

And Śāntideva, bodhisattva who reached the stage of perfect joy—

གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

solwa deb so jingyi lab tu sol

To you I pray: inspire me with your blessings!

 

མི་བརྗེད་གཟུངས་ཐོབ་པཎ་ཆེན་ལྔ་བརྒྱའི་ཚོགས། །

mi jé zung tob penchen ngabgyé tsok

Five hundred great paṇḍitas with infallible mnemonic powers,

བདུད་དཔུང་དགྲ་ལས་རྣམ་རྒྱལ་ཛེ་ཏཱ་རེ། །

düpung dra lé namgyal dzé taré

Jetāri who gained victory over the enemy, māra’s hordes,

སེམས་དཔའ་ཆེན་པོ་ཙནྡྲ་ཀཱི་རྟིའི་ཞབས། །

sempa chenpo tsandra kirti zhab

And the great and noble being, Candrakīrti—

གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

solwa deb so jingyi lab tu sol

To you I pray: inspire me with your blessings!

 

རྒྱ་ཆེན་ལུང་གི་མཛོད་འཛིན་པུཎྱ་ཤྲཱི། །

gyachen lung gi dzö dzin punya shri

Puṇyaśrī who retained a vast treasury of scriptural transmission,

བྱང་ཆུབ་སྤྱོད་པ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་ཀ་ན་ཤྲཱི། །

changchub chöpa tarchin ka na shri

Kanakaśrī, who perfected the conduct of a bodhisattva,

ཐུགས་རྗེའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་བློ་གྲོས་ལེགས་པའི་ཞབས། །

tukjé wangchuk lodrö lekpé zhab

And Sumatikīrti, powerful lord of compassion—

གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

solwa deb so jingyi lab tu sol

To you I pray: inspire me with your blessings!

 

རྒྱལ་བས་ལུང་བསྟན་བློ་ལྡན་ཤེས་རབ་ཞབས། །

gyalwé lungten loden sherab zhab

Noble Loden Sherab, prophesied by the Buddha,²

ཐོས་བསམ་བསྒོམས་པས་རྒྱུད་ཕྱུག་གྲོ་ལུང་པ། །

tö sam gompé gyü chuk dro lungpa

Drolungpa, whose mind was rich with study, reflection and meditation,³

རིག་པའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་ཕྱ་པ་ཆེན་པོའི་ཞབས། །

rigpé wangchuk chapa chenpö zhab

And the powerful lord of reasoning, great Chapa Chöseng—⁴

གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

solwa deb so jingyi lab tu sol

To you I pray: inspire me with your blessings!

 

མཐའ་ཡས་མཁྱེན་པའི་དཔལ་མངའ་བསོད་ནམས་རྩེ། །

tayé khyenpé pal nga sönam tsé

Sönam Tsemo, who possessed the splendour of boundless knowledge,⁵

རྟོགས་པའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་རྗེ་བཙུན་རིན་པོ་ཆེ། །

tokpé wangchuk jetsün rinpoche

Jetsün Rinpoche, a powerful lord of realisation,⁶

ཤེས་བྱ་ཀུན་རིག་ས་སྐྱ་པཎྜི་ཏ། །

sheja kün rik sakya pandita

And Sakya Paṇḍita, who knew all there is to know—⁷

གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

solwa deb so jingyi lab tu sol

To you I pray: inspire me with your blessings!

 

སྡོམ་བརྩོན་འདུལ་བ་འཛིན་པ་བྱང་ཆུབ་དཔལ། །

domtsön dulwa dzinpa changchub pal

Changchub Pal, who upheld the Vinaya and diligently maintained his vows,⁸

མང་ཐོས་སྒྲུབ་ལ་ཆེར་བརྩོན་བདེ་བ་དཔལ། །

mang tö drub la cher tsön dewa pal

Dewa Pal, who was learned and assiduous in practice,⁹

སྡེ་སྣོད་ཀུན་མཁྱེན་གྲགས་པ་གཞོན་ནུའི་ཞབས། །

denö künkhyen drakpa zhönnü zhab

And noble Drakpa Zhönnu, who knew the entire tripiṭaka—¹⁰

གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

solwa deb so jingyi lab tu sol

To you I pray: inspire me with your blessings!

 

གནས་བརྟན་མཁས་པའི་དབང་པོ་བསོད་ནམས་གྲགས། །

neten khepé wangpo sönam drak

The elder and mighty scholar, Sönam Drakpa,¹¹

སྐྱེ་དགུའི་གཙུག་རྒྱན་བསོད་ནམས་རྒྱལ་མཚན་དཔལ། །

kyegü tsukgyen sönam gyaltsen pal

Adornment atop the crowns of beings, Sönam Gyaltsen,¹²

གདམས་པའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་དཔལ་ལྡན་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་ཞབས། །

dampé wangchuk palden tsultrim zhab

And Palden Tsultrim, a powerful lord of practical instruction—¹³

གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

solwa deb so jingyi lab tu sol

To you I pray: inspire me with your blessings!

 

ཡེ་ཤེས་ལྔ་ལྡན་བསྟན་པའི་རྒྱལ་མཚན་འཛིན། །

yeshe ngaden tenpé gyaltsen dzin

Possessor of the five wisdoms, holder of the banner of victory for the teachings,

བྱམས་དང་སྙིང་རྗེའི་དཔལ་འབྱོར་བཟང་པོ་ཅན། །

jam dang nyingjé paljor zangpochen

Excellent one with the splendour and riches of loving kindness and compassion,

བཀའ་དྲིན་མཉམ་མེད་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེན་ལ། །

kadrin nyammé geweshé nyen la

Virtuous guide whose kindness is unequalled—

གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། །

solwa deb so jingyi lab tu sol

To you I pray: inspire me with your blessings!

 

མི་ཁོམ་བརྒྱད་སྤངས་འབྱོར་པ་བཅུ་ལྡན་པའི། །

mikhom gyé pang jorpa chu denpé

Now that I have the free and excellent support of this human life,

ལུས་རྟེན་ཕུན་ཚོགས་དལ་བ་ཐོབ་དུས་འདིར། །

lü ten püntsok dalwa tob dü dir

Avoiding the eight inopportune states and complete with the ten riches,

སྡིག་སྤངས་དགེ་བ་འབད་པས་བསྟེན་དགོས་ཞེས། །

dik pang gewa bepé ten gö zhé

I must avoid harmful action and exert myself in positive deeds—

བསམ་གཏན་དགེ་བློ་སྐྱེ་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

samten gé lo kyewar jingyi lob

Inspire me to develop concentration and a virtuous mind!

 

ཐེན་ཆེན་ལམ་གྱི་རྩ་བ་སེམས་བསྐྱེད་ཀྱི། །

ten chen lam gyi tsawa semkyé kyi

By bringing to mind the many aspects and boundless benefits

བསམ་ཡས་ཕན་ཡོན་རྣམ་མང་རྗེས་དྲན་པས། །

samyé penyön nam mang jedren pé

Of bodhicitta, which is the root of the Mahāyāna path,

སྨོན་དང་འཇུག་པའི་རིན་ཆེན་སེམས་བསྐྱེད་མཆོག །

mön dang jukpé rinchen semkyé chok

Inspire me to take on this supreme and precious commitment,

རྣམ་དག་ཆོ་གས་ལེན་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

namdak chogé lenpar jingyi lob

Both in aspiration and in action, through a ritual that is utterly pure.

 

རིན་ཆེན་སེམས་དེ་རབ་ཏུ་གཟུང་བྱའི་ཕྱིར། །

rinchen sem dé rabtu zung jé chir

So that I might thoroughly preserve this precious mind,

རྒྱལ་བའི་སྲས་ཀྱི་ལམ་མཆོག་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་གསུམ། །

gyalwé sé kyi lam chok tsultrim sum

Inspire me to guard and properly maintain all vows,

རྣམ་མང་མདོ་སྡེའི་ཚོགས་ལས་གང་གསུང་རྣམས། །

nam mang dodé tsok lé gang sung nam

The threefold discipline, supreme path of the buddha’s heirs,

ཚུལ་བཞིན་བསྲུང་སྡོམ་བྱེད་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

tsulzhin sung dom jepar jingyi lob

According to what is described in detail in the sūtra collection.

 

སྦྱིན་དང་ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་བཟོད་དང་བརྩོན་འགྲུས་དང་། །

jin dang tsultrim zö dang tsöndrü dang

Inspire me to perfect the transcendent perfections

བསམ་གཏན་ཤེས་རབ་ཕ་རོལ་ཕྱིན་སོགས་ཀྱི། །

samten sherab parol chin sok kyi

Of generosity, ethical discipline, patience, diligence,

རང་ལ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཆོས་རྣམས་ཡོངས་རྫོགས་ནས། །

rang la sangye chö nam yongdzok né

Concentration and wisdom, and a buddha’s other qualities,

རྒྱལ་སྲས་སྤྱོད་ལ་གནས་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

gyalsé chö la nepar jingyi lob

And thus to abide by the conduct of a bodhisattva!

 

བྱང་ཆུབ་ལམ་ལ་སྦྱངས་པའི་དགེ་རྩ་ཀུན། །

changchub lam la jangpé getsa kün

Inspire me so that I may connect the roots of virtue from training

རྨད་བྱུང་སྨོན་ལམ་བཟང་པོས་མཚམས་སྦྱར་ནས། །

mejung mönlam zangpö tsam jar né

In the path of awakening to excellent and wondrous aspirations,

སྐུ་གསུམ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱི། །

ku sum tarchin dzokpé sangye kyi

And thereby swiftly attain the level of buddhahood

གོ་འཕང་མྱུར་དུ་ཐོབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

gopang nyurdu tobpar jingyi lob

Wherein the three kāyas are perfectly complete!

 

བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའི་སྤྱོད་པ་འཇུག་པའི་བླ་མ་བརྒྱུད་པ་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་པའི་རིམ་པ་འདི་ནི་ཤཱཀྱའི་དགེ་སློང་ཀུན་དགའ་བཟང་པོས་སྦྱར་བའོ།། །།

This prayer to the lineage of gurus for the Bodhicaryāvatāra was composed by the monk-follower of Śākya, Kunga Zangpo.
