A Brief Practice for Paying Homage and Making Offerings to the Buddha Together with His Retinue of Arhats

ཨོཾ་སྭ་སྟི།

om svasti

Oṃ svasti!

ཐུབ་དབང་གནས་བརྟན་བཅུ་དྲུག་ལ་ཕྱག་མཆོད་གསོལ་བ་གདབ་པར་འདོད་པས། འབྱོར་ན་ཐུབ་པའི་དབང་པོ་གཙོ་འཁོར་གྱི་སྣང་བརྙན་མདུན་མཆོད་པ་ཇི་ལྟར་རིགས་པ་གཙང་ཞིང་བཀོད་པས་མཛེས་པར་བཤམས། མ་གྲུབ་ན་ཡིད་ཀྱི་ཆོ་ག་བྱ། གང་ལྟར་ཡང༌།

Should you wish to pay homage and make offerings and prayers to the Buddha and the sixteen sthaviras, prepare some offerings, and arrange them cleanly and beautifully before an image of Buddha Śākyamuni and his retinue. If this is not possible, the practice may be done as a visualization.

Refuge and Bodhicitta

སངས་རྒྱས་ཆོས་དང་ཚོགས་ཀྱི་མཆོག་རྣམས་ལ། །

sangye chö dang tsok kyi chok nam la

In the Buddha, the Dharma and the Supreme Assembly,

བྱང་ཆུབ་བར་དུ་བདག་ནི་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆི། །

changchub bardu dak ni kyab su chi

I take refuge until I attain enlightenment.

བདག་གིས་སྦྱིན་སོགས་བགྱིས་པའི་བསོད་ནམས་ཀྱིས། །

dak gi jinsok gyipé sönam kyi

Through the merit of practising generosity and so on,

འགྲོ་ལ་ཕན་ཕྱིར་སངས་རྒྱས་འགྲུབ་པར་ཤོག །

dro la pen chir sangye drubpar shok

May I attain buddhahood for the benefit of beings!

ལན་གསུམ་གྱིས་སྐྱབས་སེམས་བྱ།

Repeat this verse three times

Blessing the Environment

སྐྱབས་གནས་དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་གྱི་བདེན་པ་དང༌། །

kyabné könchok sum gyi denpa dang

By the truth of the Buddha, Dharma and Saṅgha, the objects of refuge,

རྒྱལ་བ་སྲས་བཅས་རྣམས་ཀྱི་བྱིན་རླབས་དང༌། །

gyalwa sé ché nam kyi jinlab dang

The blessings of all the victorious ones and their bodhisattva heirs,

ཚོགས་གཉིས་མངའ་ཐང་ཆོས་དབྱིངས་དག་སྟོབས་ཀྱིས། །

tsok nyi ngatang chöying dak tob kyi

The power of the two accumulations and the purity and strength of the dharmadhātu,

སྣོད་བཅུད་བདེ་ཅན་ཞིང་གི་བཀོད་པའི་དབུས། །

nöchü dechen zhing gi köpé ü

May the outer environment and its inhabitants become those of the blissful paradise of Sukhāvatī, with, in its centre,

ཡིད་འཕྲོག་ནོར་བུའི་གཞལ་མེད་ཁང་ཆེན་པོར། །

yitrok norbü zhalmé khang chenpor

A great celestial palace of precious gems, stunning to behold,

རིན་ཆེན་སེང་ཁྲི་པད་ཟླའི་གདན་མཆོག་དང༌། །

rinchen sengtri pé dé den chok dang

Inside which is a jewelled lion throne with lotus and moon-disc seats—

དངོས་བཤམས་གཟུངས་རིག་མོས་སྟོབས་ཀྱིས་སྤྲུལ་པའི། །

ngö sham zung rik mö tob kyi trulpé

Here and now, may I experience this pure realm filled with clouds of actual offerings,

མཆོད་སྤྲིན་རྒྱ་མཚོས་གང་ཞིང་སྤྱོད་གྱུར་ཅིག །

chötrin gyatsö gang zhing chö gyur chik

And those created through the power of mantras, awareness and aspiration!

ཅེས་ས་གཞི་དང་གནས་ཡོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ། །

With this, the place and offerings are all blessed.

Invocation

དེ་ནས་འདུན་པ་རྩེ་གཅིག་པས།

Then, focusing your aspiration one-pointedly, recite the following:

ལག་མཐིལ་ལྟར་མཉམ་རིན་ཆེན་གྱིས་སྤྲས་པ། །

laktil tar nyam rinchen gyi trepa

The ground is smooth like the palm of the hand, and bedecked with jewels.

ལྗོན་ཤིང་ཆུ་མཚོས་བརྒྱན་པའི་ས་གཞིའི་དབུས། །

jönshing chu tsö gyenpé sazhi ü

It is adorned with wish-granting trees, rivers and lakes. In its centre,

རིན་ཆེན་ལས་གྲུབ་གྲུ་བཞི་སྒོ་བཞི་པ། །

rinchen lé drub dru zhi go zhipa

In the jewelled palace with its four sides and four doors,

པདྨ་ཉི་ཟླས་བརྒྱན་པའི་གདན་སྟེང་དུ། །

pema nyidé gyenpé den tengdu

Upon seats of lotus, sun and moon,

ཐུགས་རྗེས་རྩོད་པའི་དུས་ཀྱི་གདུལ་བྱ་རྣམས། །

tukjé tsöpé dü kyi dulja nam

Is the compassionate protector of beings, the one who sets

རྣམ་གྲོལ་ལམ་ལ་འགོད་མཛད་འགྲོ་བའི་མགོན། །

namdrol lam la gödzé drowé gön

The beings of these troubled times on the path to liberation,

ཐུབ་པ་མཆོག་དང་གནས་བརྟན་ཆེན་པོ་རྣམས། །

tubpa chok dang neten chenpo nam

The supreme Śākyamuni together with the great sthaviras—

འཁོར་དང་བཅས་པ་གནས་འདིར་གཤེགས་སུ་གསོལ། །

khor dang chepa né dir shek su sol

Come now to this place together with your retinues, we pray!

ཅེས་སྤྱན་དྲངས། །སྤྲོ་ན་གནས་བརྟན་ཕྱག་མཆོད་ཚིགས་བཅད་ལྷུག་གང་རིགས་བྱ། བསྡུ་ན། །

When doing the practice more elaborately, longer verses of praise and offering to the arhats, either in verse or prose, can be done here. If you are doing the concise version then simply continue with:

ཐབས་མཁས་ཐུགས་རྗེས་ཤཱཀྱའི་རིགས་སུ་འཁྲུངས། །

tabkhé tukjé shakyé rik su trung

Through skilful means and compassion, you were born in the Śākya clan,

གཞན་གྱིས་མི་ཐུབ་བདུད་ཀྱི་དཔུང་འཇོམས་པ། །

zhen gyi mitub dü kyi pung jompa

And, utterly invincible, you overcame the forces of Māra,

གསེར་གྱི་ལྷུན་པོ་ལྟ་བུར་བརྗིད་པའི་སྐུ། །

ser gyi lhünpo tabur jipé ku

Your form resplendent like a mountain of burnished gold—

ཤཱཀྱའི་རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཞབས་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །

shakyé gyalpö zhab la chaktsal lo

King of the Śākyas, at your feet I bow!

 

ཐུབ་པའི་བཀའ་བསྒོས་བསྟན་པའི་རྒྱལ་མཚན་འཛིན། །

tubpé kagö tenpé gyaltsen dzin

You who were instructed by the Buddha to uphold the victory banner of the teachings:

ཡན་ལག་འབྱུང་དང་མ་ཕམ་ནགས་ན་གནས། །

yenlakjung dang mapam naknané

Aṅgaja, Ajita and Vanavāsin,

དུས་ལྡན་རྡོ་རྗེ་མོའི་བུ་བཟང་པོ་དང༌། །

düden dorjé möbu zangpo dang

Kālika, Vajrīputra and Śrībhadra,

གསེར་བེའུ་བྷ་ར་དྷྭ་ཛ་གསེར་ཅན་མཆོག །

serbé'u bharadhaja serchen chok

Kanakavatsa and sublime Kanakabhāradvāja,

འཕགས་པ་བ་ཀུ་ལ་དང་སྒྲ་གཅན་འཛིན། །

pakpa bakula dang drachen dzin

The noble Bakula and Rāhula,

ལམ་ཕྲན་བྷ་ར་དྷྭ་ཛ་བསོད་སྙོམས་ལེན། །

lamtren bharadhaja sönyom len

Kṣudrapanthaka and Piṇḍola Bhāradvāja,

ལམ་བསྟན་ཀླུའི་སྡེ་སྦེད་བྱེད་མི་ཕྱེད་པ། །

lamten lüdé bejé michepa

Panthaka, Nāgasena, Gopaka and Abhedya,

དགེ་བསྙེན་དྷརྨ་ཏཱ་དང་རྒྱལ་ཆེན་བཞི། །

genyen dharmata dang gyalchen zhi

Upāsaka Dharmatāla and the Four Great Kings,

འཁོར་དང་བཅས་པ་ཞབས་ཀྱི་པདྨོ་ལ། །

khor dang chepa zhab kyi pemo la

Together with all your retinues—at your lotus feet,

ཕྱག་འཚལ་སྐྱབས་མཆི་སྙིང་ནས་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

chaktsal kyab chi nying né solwa deb

I prostrate, taking refuge and offering heartfelt prayers!

 

ས་གཞི་སྤོས་ཆུས་བྱུགས་ཤིང་མེ་ཏོག་བཀྲམ། །

sazhi pö chü juk shing metok tram

The ground is purified with scented water and strewn with flowers;

རི་རབ་གླིང་བཞི་ཉི་ཟླས་བརྒྱན་པ་འདི། །

rirab ling zhi nyidé gyenpa di

It is adorned with Sumeru, the four continents and the sun and moon:

སངས་རྒྱས་ཞིང་དུ་དམིགས་ཏེ་ཕུལ་བ་ཡིས། །

sangye zhing du mik té pulwa yi

Thinking of it as the blessed buddha-fields, I offer it.

འགྲོ་ཀུན་རྣམ་དག་ཞིང་ལ་སྤྱོད་པར་ཤོག །

dro kün namdak zhing la chöpar shok

By virtue of this offering, may all beings enjoy the happiness of those pure realms.

 

དངོས་བཤམས་གཟུངས་རིག་མོས་སྟོབས་ཀྱིས་སྤྲུལ་པའི། །

ngö sham zung rik mö tob kyi trulpé

Both actual offerings and those created through the power of mantras, awareness and aspiration,

མཆོད་ཚོགས་ཀུན་འབུལ་སྡིག་ལྟུང་ཐམས་ཅད་བཤགས། །

chö tsok kün bul diktung tamché shak

All these I offer; I confess all my harmful acts and downfalls;

དགེ་ལ་ཡི་རངས་བསྐུལ་ཞིང་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

gé la yirang kul zhing solwa deb

I rejoice in all that is virtuous, and request and beseech you!

འདིས་མཚོན་དགེ་བ་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཆེན་པོར་བསྔོ། །

di tsön gewa changchub chenpor ngo

All this virtue, I dedicate towards great enlightenment!

ཞེས་ཡན་ལག་བདུན་པ་འབུལ། དགེ་སློང་ཡིན་ན་སྐབས་འདིར་གསོ་སྦྱོང་བྱིན་རླབས་དང༌། དུས་དྲན་བསྟེན་པ་སོགས་དགོས་པ་ཡོད་ན་བྱས་ཀྱང་ལེགས།

With this, perform the seven-branch offering. If you are an ordained monk or nun, and you need to do the practices of Sojong or Düdren, they can be done here.

བཅོམ་ལྡན་གདན་འཛོམས་ཆེན་པོ་དགོངས་སུ་གསོལ། །

chomden dendzom chenpo gong su sol

Great conquerors and throne holders, please think of us!

ཐུབ་དབང་གནས་བརྟན་འཕགས་པའི་ཚོགས་རྣམས་ཀྱི། །

tubwang neten pakpé tsok nam kyi

Lord of sages and gathering of noble sthaviras,

མཚན་མཆོག་ཐོས་དང་དྲན་བརྗོད་ཕྱག་མཆོད་མཐུས། །

tsen chok tö dang dren jö chakchö tü

By the power of hearing, thinking of, and repeating your excellent names, and paying homage and making offerings to you,

བདག་ཅག་ལ་སོགས་སེམས་ཅན་གང་དང་གང༌། །

dakchak lasok semchen gang dang gang

For us and all other beings, whosoever and wheresoever they may be,

གནས་སྐབས་མཐར་ཐུག་མི་མཐུན་ཕྱོགས་ཀུན་ཞི། །

nekab tartuk mitün chok kün zhi

May all temporary and ultimate disharmony be pacified!

བདེ་སྐྱིད་ཆོས་ལྡན་དཔལ་འབྱོར་རབ་ཏུ་འཕེལ། །

dekyi chöden paljor rabtu pel

And may happiness, virtue, glory and prosperity increase!

 

ཐེག་མཆོག་དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་ཀྱིས་རྗེས་བཟུང་ནས། །

tek chok geweshé kyi jezung né

Bless us, so that we may follow the spiritual teachers of the supreme vehicle,

གསུང་གི་བདུད་རྩིས་འཚོ་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

sung gi dütsi tsowar jingyi lob

And always be sustained by the nectar of their teachings!

ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་དག་ཅིང་ཐོས་བསམ་སྒོམ་པར་ལྡན། །

tsultrim dak ching tö sam gompar den

Bless us to maintain pure discipline and engage in study, reflection and meditation,

ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་དང་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་གཉིས་འབྱོངས། །

ngepar jung dang changchub sem nyi jong

So we may train perfectly in renunciation and twofold bodhicitta,

རྟག་ཏུ་གཞན་ཕན་སྤྱོད་ལས་མི་གཡེལ་བས། །

taktu zhenpen chö lé miyelwé

And without ever neglecting activity for the benefit of others,

རྣམ་མཁྱེན་གོ་འཕང་ཐོབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །

namkhyen gopang tobpar jingyi lob

Attain the level of perfect omniscience!

 

རྒྱལ་བསྟན་དྲི་མེད་ཕྱོགས་བཅུར་དར་ཞིང་རྒྱས། །

gyalten drimé chok chur dar zhing gyé

May the faultless teaching of the Buddha flourish and spread in all directions!

བསྟན་འཛིན་མཆོག་རྣམས་ཞབས་པད་བསྐལ་བརྒྱར་བརྟན། །

tendzin chok nam zhabpé kal gyar ten

May the supreme holders of the teachings remain for hundreds of kalpas!

འཇིག་རྟེན་དགེ་ལེགས་ཆེན་པོས་ཁྱབ་པ་དང༌། །

jikten gelek chenpö khyabpa dang

May virtue and excellence pervade throughout the world!

དོན་གཉིས་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ་པའི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག །

dön nyi lhün gyi drubpé tashi shok

And may our own and others’ benefit be spontaneously accomplished!

ཅེས་གསོལ་བ་གདབ་ཅིང་བཀྲ་ཤིས་པའི་ཚིག་གིས་མཐའ་བརྒྱན་པར་བྱའོ། །

Recite this prayer and then further adorn the practice with verses of auspiciousness.

 

ཞེས་པའང་དད་པ་དང་ལྡན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ཆེད་དུ་བྱ་བྲལ་བ་འཇམ་དབྱངས་མཁྱེན་བརྩེའི་དབང་པོས་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པ་དེ་དེ་བཞིན་དུ་འགྲུབ་པར་གྱུར་ཅིག། །།

The carefree Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo composed this prayer for the benefit of those with faith. May it be accomplished!
