A Prayer to the Previous Incarnations

ཨོཾ་སྭ་སྟི།

om svasti

Oṃ svasti!

རྒྱལ་བ་སྲས་དང་བཅས་པའི་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྐུ། །

gyalwa sé dang chepé yeshe ku

Wisdom embodiment of all the buddhas and their bodhisattva heirs,

ཕྱོགས་དུས་མུ་མཐའ་མེད་པར་ཁྱབ་པའི་བདག །

chok dü mu tamepar khyabpé dak

Sovereign ruler present throughout the whole of space and time,

རང་བྱུང་དང་པོའི་སངས་རྒྱས་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས། །

rangjung dangpö sangye chomdendé

Spontaneously arisen primal buddha, transcendent conqueror,

མགོན་པོ་འཇམ་པའི་དབྱངས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

gönpo jampé yang la solwa deb

Lord and protector Mañjughoṣa, to you I pray!

མཁྱེན་རབ་དབང་ཕྱུག་འཇམ་དཔལ་བཤེས་གཉེན་དང༌། །

khyen rab wangchuk jampal shenyen dang

Powerful master of wisdom, Mañjuśrīmitra,

རྡོ་རྗེའི་སྐུ་བརྙེས་བི་མ་ལ་མི་ཏྲ། །

dorjé ku nyé bimalamitra

Vimalamitra, who gained an indestructible vajra form,

འཁོར་ལོ་སྡོམ་དངོས་རྡོ་རྗེ་དྲིལ་བུ་པ། །

khorlo dom ngö dorjé drilbu pa

Cakrasaṃvara in person, Vajraghaṇṭāpāda,

པཎ་ཆེན་སྒོ་མཐའ་ཡས་པར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

panchen go tayepar solwa deb

And the great paṇḍita Anantamukhamati,¹ to you I pray!

ཆོས་རྒྱལ་ཚངས་པ་ལྷ་ཡི་མེ་ཏོག་དང༌། །

chögyal tsangpa lha yi metok dang

Dharma-king Tsangpa Lhayi Metok,²

དེ་ཡི་ཡང་སྤྲུལ་མཆོག་གྲུབ་རྒྱལ་པོའི་ཞབས། །

dé yi yangtrul chok drub gyalpö zhab

And the reincarnation Chokdrub Gyalpo,³

སྨྲྀ་ཏི་ཛྙཱ་ན་ཉང་སྟོན་ཉི་མ་འོད། །

smritijnana nyang tön nyima ö

Smṛtijñāna,⁴ Nyangtön Nyima Özer,⁵

ཆོས་རྒྱལ་འཕགས་པ་རྣམས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

chögyal pakpa nam la solwa deb

And Chögyal Phakpa,⁶ to you I pray!

གྲུབ་པའི་གཙུག་རྒྱན་མི་ལ་རས་པ་དང༌། །

drubpé tsukgyen mi la repa dang

Crowning jewel of siddhas, Milarepa,

འབྲི་གུང་རིན་ཆེན་དཔལ་དང་དྲི་མེད་འོད། །

drigung rinchen pal dang drimé ö

Drikung Rinchen Pal,⁷ Drimé Özer,⁸

སྨན་བླ་དངོས་སྣང་གཡུ་ཐོག་ཡོན་ཏན་མགོན། །

men la ngö nang yu tok yönten gön

Medicine Buddha incarnate, Yuthok Yönten Gönpo,⁹

བསོད་ནམས་རྒྱལ་མཚན་རྣམས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

sönam gyaltsen nam la solwa deb

And Sonam Gyaltsen,¹⁰ to you I pray!

ནགས་ཀྱི་རིན་ཆེན་འགོས་ལོ་གཞོན་ནུ་དཔལ། །

nak kyi rinchen gö lo zhönnu pal

Vanaratna,¹¹ Gö Lotsawa Shyönnu Pal,¹²

མཁྱེན་རབ་ཆོས་རྗེ་པཎ་ཆེན་དགེ་འདུན་གྲུབ། །

རྣལ་འབྱོར་དབང་ཕྱུག་ཐང་སྟོང་རྒྱལ་པོ་དང༌། །

Lord of siddhas, Thangtong Gyalpo,¹⁵

དཀོན་མཆོག་རྒྱལ་མཚན་རྣམས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

könchok gyaltsen nam la solwa deb

And Könchok Gyaltsen,¹⁶ to you I pray!

ས་ལོ་འཇམ་དབྱངས་ཀུན་དགའ་བསོད་ནམས་དང༌། །

sa lo jamyang künga sönam dang

Sakya Lotsawa Jamyang Kunga Sonam,¹⁷

མངའ་རིས་པཎ་ཆེན་གནས་གསར་མཁྱེན་བརྩེའི་དབང༌། །

ngari panchen né sar khyentsé wang

Ngari Paṇchen,¹⁸ Nesar Khyentse Wangchuk,¹⁹

བཀྲ་ཤིས་སྟོབས་རྒྱལ་བློ་བཟང་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་སྡེ། །

tashi tob gyal lo zang gyatsö dé

Tashi Tobgyal,²⁰ Lobzang Gyatsöi De,²¹

རྒྱལ་བ་ཚངས་དབྱངས་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

gyalwa tsang yang zhab la solwa deb

And Gyalwa Tsangyang,²² to you I pray!

རྩོད་དུས་ཀུན་མཁྱེན་ཆེན་པོ་འཇིགས་མེད་གླིང༌། །

tsödü künkhyen chenpo jikmé ling

Great omniscient one in this troubled age, Jikmé Lingpa,

གྲུབ་པའི་དབང་ཕྱུག་ཡེ་ཤེས་རྡོ་རྗེ་དང༌། །

drubpé wangchuk yeshe dorjé dang

Lord of siddhas, Yeshe Dorje,²³ no different from

དབྱེར་མེད་བཀའ་བབས་བདུན་ལྡན་མཁྱེན་བརྩེའི་དབང༌། །

yermé kabab dünden khyentsé wang

Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, recipient of the seven special transmissions,²⁴

འཇམ་དབྱངས་བློ་གྲོས་རྒྱ་མཚོར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

jamyang lodrö gyatsor solwa deb

And Jamyang Lodrö Gyatso,²⁵ to you I pray!

སྐྱེ་བ་འདི་བཟུང་བྱང་ཆུབ་མ་ཐོབ་བར། །

kyewa di zung changchub matob bar

In this life and in future, until I attain enlightenment,

རྗེ་བཙུན་བླ་མ་ཁྱེད་དང་མི་འབྲལ་ཞིང༌། །

jetsün lama khyé dang midral zhing

May I never be separated from you, my precious master,

གསུང་གསང་གདམས་པའི་བདུད་རྩིར་སྤྱོད་པ་དང་། །

sung sang dampé dütsir chöpa dang

May I always experience the nectar of your instructions, your secret speech,

རང་གཞན་དོན་གཉིས་ལྷུན་གྱིས་འགྲུབ་པར་ཤོག །

rangzhen dön nyi lhün gyi drubpar shok

And may my own and others’ welfare be accomplished spontaneously!

ཅེས་པ་འདིའང་དད་ལྡན་ཐུགས་བཞེད་སྐོང་ཕྱིར་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་པས་བྲིས་པའོ།།  །།

1. ↑ Tib. sgo mtha’ yas pa’i blo gros. According to Jamgön Kongtrul’s biography of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, he was a student of Vasubandhu. The name also appears among the previous incarnations of Jamgön Amnye Zhab Ngawang Kunga Sonam (1597–1659), who is himself counted among Jamyang Khyentse’s previous rebirths.
2. ↑ Tsangpa Lhayi Metok is the secret name which King Tri Songdetsen is said to have received from Guru Padmasambhava during an empowerment at Samye Chimphu.
3. ↑ Trisong Deutsen’s reincarnation, the son of Mutik Tsenpo, known as Gyalse Lharje, later reborn as a tertön thirteen times.
4. ↑ According to Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Smṛtijñāna, who travelled to Tibet and China, was praised by the paṇḍita Dānaśīla as unrivalled in the whole of India for his learning and accomplishment.
5. ↑ Nyang Ral Nyima Özer (1124-1192). The first of the five sovereign tertöns and a reincarnation of King Trisong Deutsen.
