The Second Buddha
The Second Buddha
Advice for Yönten Gyatso
by Yukhok Chatralwa Chöying Rangdrol
Second Buddha,
Ngayab Lingpa,[1]
None other than
The All-Knowing
Father and Son,[2]
In my heart’s core,
Never parting.
We who follow
The All-Knowing
Must cultivate
Repeatedly
A deep longing
For true freedom
And stop clinging
To saṃsāra,
The bodhi-wish
To awaken
For others’ sake,
And devoutly
Seeing one’s guide
As the Buddha.
Blessings will then
Enter the heart.
Vajra brother,
Listen to me.
Meditating
On the nature,
Should you fall prey
To torpidness
Or to dullness,
Meditation
Will be no more
Than exertion
For no purpose.
If you can bring
Out the brightness
In the torpor
You will remain
Within wisdom
Free of object,
Which resembles
The sea when still.
If you can bring
Out clarity
In the dullness
You will remain
In a state that
Is like the sun—
Thought-free and bright.
If you enhance,
The bare aspect,
Pure and empty,
You will remain
Without effort
In a state that
Is like the sky,
Clear and lucid.
These three facets
Are not distinct—
Three times timeless,
Dharmatā wheel,
Undistinguished
Sessions and breaks.
Don’t know how to?
Then seek these three—
Brightness, clearness,
And bareness too.
One and twenty
Thousand types, all
Karmic winds of
Subject-object
Will enter the
Central channel;
This is not hard.
If knots in the
Avadhūti
Are then released,
Meditation
Of any kind
Will not bind you
But will be the
Kadak rigpa,
Forever pure.
As a mark of
Deluded mind’s
Dissolution
Within the ground,
Dharma chakra’s
Knots will be freed.
Then the throat-drum
Of the chakra
Of enjoyment
Should be sounded.
Meditating
On Tögal too
Will bring freedom
In this lifetime
In the kāya
Of sambhoga,
Related to
Appearances.
The coarse body’s
Dissolution
Is a feature
Of the Ati,
Great Perfection.
There are many
Mindfulness modes.
But apply that
Which we call the
Genuine one,
Beyond the eight
Consciousnesses.
Yönten Gyatso,
My Dharma friend,
Repeatedly
You said you need
Something like this.
So, I, the one
Who is idle,
Quickly wrote down
What came to me,
As by magic.
