I pay homage at the outset
To the yidam, who bestows the supreme siddhi,
I shall now set out the Yidam, Wish-Fulfilling Jewel,
So that the twofold purpose may be spontaneously accomplished.
First, rise at dawn in an isolated, pleasant location. Sit cross-legged and expel the threefold winds. Then, after gently holding the breath, take refuge and generate bodhicitta. Contemplate emptiness with "oṃ svabhāva śuddhāḥ sarvadharmāḥ svabhāva śuddho ‘haṃ". Out of this state, there emerges from baṃ (བཾ) a red lotus, upon which stands a raṃ (རཾ) out of which you yourself appear as red Amitābha, seated in vajra posture, in the centre of a blazing sun. Your two hands are in the gesture of equanimity and hold a long-life vase filled with nectar. You are dressed in a lower garment of orange silk and a jewelled diadem and other adornments. In your radiant heart, in the centre of a four-petalled lotus, is a sun and a red syllable hrīḥ (ཧྲཱིཿ), from which light emanates. This light collects longevity, merit and resplendence from all the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions and from the sun and moon; and this then fills your own body. At the chakra of great bliss at your crown, in the centre of a lotus, sun and moon, are Samantabhadra and consort embracing one another. As the light from the hrīḥ strikes the point of their union, it brings about a continuous flow of combined red and white bodhicitta, the nectar of longevity. This then fills your body from the soles of your feet to the crown of your head. Consider that when it reaches the hrīḥ it brings pulsating great bliss. Draw up the lower wind-energy slightly and push down the upper wind-energy, then hold the united wind-energies at the heart. Meditate undistractedly for a long while. Then, as you do the recitation, co-ordinate it with the winds. Lift the tip of your tongue to the upper palate, and keep your teeth and lips slightly apart. As you draw in the lower wind-energy recite, "Hrīḥ! Hrīḥ!" at length. Recite this a hundred or a thousand times, until you experience pulsating bliss, physically and mentally. At the same time, rays of light gather the nectar of immortal life from the buddhas of the ten directions and so on, which then appears like rain and dissolves into the hrīḥ at your heart. When it is time to conclude, light radiates from the hrīḥ, causing the whole world—environment and inhabitants—to melt into red light. This then dissolves into the hrīḥ at your heart, and you obtain the siddhi of immutable life. All the buddhas, bodhisattvas, śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas of the ten directions then melt into light and dissolve into the hrīḥ, which is thereby transformed into vajra-like longevity. Visualize this and hold your breath. Then focus undistractedly on the hrīḥ and meditate for a while. Finally, dedicate the merit for the sake of all sentient beings, and swallow some saliva.
Through practising this root sādhana for twenty-one days and thereafter uninterruptedly in sessions, you will avoid all forms of untimely death and lead a long life in good health.
If you dream of excellent crops, reaping a harvest, piles of grain, the rising sun or moon, bringing together many types of adversary, or counting a quantity of items, these are signs of completion.
You may also extend your life for a number of years beyond its original span based on the weeks for which you practice: seven days of practice will avert death for a year; fourteen days will extend your life for two years; twenty-one days will extend it for three years, and so on.
This represents a most secret, crucial instruction from the oral lineage committed to writing, so do not pass it on other than in a one-to-one transmission. This is an exceedingly profound, sublime and secret key instruction.
Through the virtue of setting down in writing
This means of accomplishing immortal life,
May all beings perfectly attain the level of Amitāyus
And, with vajra longevity, spontaneously accomplish the twofold aim.
This concludes the long-life practice of the yidam called The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel composed by Longchen Rabjam, a yogin of the supreme vehicle. Let it be virtuous! Virtuous! Virtuous!
